Bin Bag Buyer’s Guide
A bin bag is a household essential, and with many packs containing over 200 liners, it’s important you make the right decision to avoid wasting your money.

Dimensions
The dimension of your bin liner should match that of your bin, so that you don’t waste bin space. If you have a tall and narrow bin, you’ll need a bin bag with enough room at the top to fold it over. Likewise, if you purchase a bag that’s too tall for your bin, you’ll have an unsightly folded mess at the top!
Capacity
This refers to how much rubbish your bin can hold and is measured in litres. While a 30L bin bag should fit in a 30L bin, it’s still worth checking that the bag is the right shape. Although most bin liners are designed with strength in mind, take care not to overfill it.
Durability
Look for a bag made from durable plastic with a thick drawstring at the top. Many come with leak protection to stop bin juice from spilling onto your floor. Heavy duty bags are more expensive but can hold a larger amount of rubbish. Be careful not to overfill your bin as this can make emptying extremely difficult.
Bin Bags FAQ
What size is a standard bin bag?
Bin bags come in a range of sizes to match the huge range of bin sizes on the market. 15-30L bin bags are for small households, while 40-50L bin bags are suitable for medium to large households.
What size of bin bag do I need?
To work out what bin bag you need, you must first measure the circumference of your bin. Measure the length all the way around the top of the bin, then divide this by two. This will give you the open width dimension you need.
Then measure the height of your bin from the top to the bottom. Add around 7” to the height to account for the overhang.
How to tie a bin bag?
Most bin bags come with a drawstring that can be easily tightened and knotted. If you are using a bin bag without a drawstring, take the two sides of your bin bag and tie them in a standard knot. Be careful not to overfill the bag so that you are able to do this. Tighten the knot, and then do the same again so that the bag is double knotted.
