Material
Dustpans and brooms come in a variety of materials, but the most popular choice is plastic. It’s easy to clean, very affordable, durable, and extremely lightweight.
For added strength and durability, look for a dustpan and broom with either steel or aluminium handles. These are tougher than plastic, whilst aluminium is still very lightweight. Metal handles cost more than plastic, but they should last a lot longer.
Finally, look out for the bristles. Many brooms have rubber bristles which are hygienic and very effective. Rubber bristles attract and trap the dirt and dust, unlike many traditional brooms which simply spread it around the floor.
Design
Most dustpan and broom sets have a similar design, but there’s a few key features that can aid ease of use. Those with a collapsible handle and a foldable pan are easier to store. You should also look for a comfortable grip on both handles.
Many brooms come with various types of bristles. Angled bristles allow the broom to scoop dirt out of corners and awkward areas, while other types of bristles are suitable for both large and small particles.
Handle
The handle is important to look out for. A long handle allows you to sweep up dirt and dust without bending down, but these are harder to store. Telescopic handles are a popular choice, as you can position the handle at your chosen height, and collapse it after for easy storage.
Some dustpans won’t have a handle and are instead positioned using your feet. This means no bending down is required, and they are both easy to use and hygienic.
