Concealed Cistern FAQ

What is a concealed cistern and how does it work?

While many older homes have their cisterns situated behind their toilet (usually used to store extra toilet paper!), modern and minimalist homes are now utilising the concealed cistern. These are hidden cisterns, usually placed inside or behind the wall  Concealed cisterns are aesthetic, more hygienic and can open up space in your bathroom, as your toilet won’t stick as far out into the room.

How to access a concealed toilet cistern?

Many concealed cisterns have a flush plate that can be used as an access panel, allowing you to reach the cistern whenever you need to. Depending on where your cistern is located, you may also be able to access it through a cabinet or the ceiling.

How to fit a concealed toilet cistern?

Fitting a concealed cistern can be tricky, so if you’re new to DIY we recommend enlisting the help of a plumber. Ensure you always follow the instructions provided with the cistern you have purchased.

Turn off the water supply and dismantle your old cistern. Set up your frame and connect the cistern to the frame, with the flush pipe at the underside. Attach the fixing mounts and the waste pipe elbow to the frame.

Put the entire unit into place on the outside of the wall. Use a spirit level to check it’s straight, while also checking the placement of the water supply and waste pipe. Once you are happy with the position you can conceal the unit, either in a cabinet, behind the wall or covered with panels.

Each concealed cistern is slightly different, so while this is a rough guide, we highly recommend following the instructions provided with your purchase.

Conclusion

A concealed cistern is a great option if you lack bathroom space and crave that minimalist and contemporary look. For the ease of installation, good insulation and low noise, the Grohe 38422000 Cistern is our top recommendation.
