Dining Chair Cushion Buyer’s Guide
Dining chairs are rarely the comfiest items of furniture, and if you find yourself starting to fidget uncomfortably towards the end of a long meal with friends or family, you should think about investing in a set of dining chair cushions. These not only enhance the look of your dining room, but they’ll also keep both you and your guests comfortable for long periods of time.
There’s a huge range of dining chair cushions on the market. Not sure what to look out for? Take a look at this buyer’s guide.
Material
Dining chair cushions are usually made from a combination of foam, polyester and cotton. The foam is used for the filling, and this can be as thick as you like. Often just a thin foam filling is enough to relieve pressure on your buttocks and spine, but you may prefer a thicker cushion. The only downside to foam is that it lacks breathability, meaning you may get hotter in the summer than you would without a cushion.
Cotton and polyester are generally used for the cover. Cotton is natural which makes it suitable for sensitive skin and it’s also better quality. It can usually be cleaned in the washing machine when needed.
Polyester cushion covers are cheaper than cotton, and they also benefit from easy maintenance. For the benefits of both, look for a cotton and polyester blend.
Range of Colours & Designs
Most dining chair cushions will come in a range of colours. Whether you want your cushions to blend with the rest of your decor, or you want your cushions to stand out against your chairs, there should be a cushion to suit you.
The design can also vary. Those with button effect detailing bring a vintage flair to your table, while a gingham finish can complete the look. Minimalist seat pads with a thin design tend to be better for contemporary dining rooms, and these can still be very comfortable.
Size
It’s important that your dining chair cushions are the same size as the seat. Most dining chairs have between a 30 x 30cm and 40 x 40cm seat, but it’s worth measuring to make sure. While a cushion that’s slightly too small for your chair won’t look too out of place, a cushion that’s too large will look messy.
The height of your cushion is also important. Booster dining cushions are becoming more and more popular for those struggling with injuries or chronic conditions. Booster cushions are taller than standard dining chair cushions, and you should find it a lot easier to get in and out of your chair.
