Material
The vast majority of dinner forks are made from stainless steel, but there are different types of stainless steel to choose from. Those with a higher nickel content are rust resistant and shiny, although they are generally more expensive. 18/10 stainless steel has 10% nickel so costs more, while 18/0 contains 0% nickel.
It’s also important that your stainless steel cutlery is food grade. Food grade stainless steel is corrosion resistant, tough and usually dishwasher safe. 304 stainless steel can contain up to 35% nickel.
Design
To the untrained eye, most dinner forks can look the same. However, there is a big difference between a fork used everyday and one suitable for formal occasions. Forks with longer prongs tend to be best for formal dining, while shorter prongs are better for everyday use.
Quality
Quality is important if you want your cutlery to last. Ironically, the best quality cutlery can sometimes be the hardest to take care of. Some cutlery needs to be cleaned by hand and polished after use. Everyday cutlery should be long lasting, durable and dishwasher safe.
