Door Security Lock Buyer’s Guide
Giving your home the extra security of a good lock, will deter intruders and help you sleep better at night. While traditional door locks are good for basic security, more advanced security is a highly worthwhile investment.
Not sure what to look for when it comes to the best security lock for front doors? Check out this buyer’s guide.
The first decision you’ll make will be the type of lock you’re after. A deadlock is a popular option. This features a simple key operated bolt, and it can be paired with a normal lock for additional security and easy installation.
Digital door locks are either mechanical or battery operated. These have a programmable code, that keeps both internal and external doorways secure. They are popular in commercial spaces, but equally useful on your front door. Some come with the option to use a key card as well as a pin code.
Door locks for conservatories and French doors usually cover both handles and prevent the doors from being forced open from the outside. These won’t require a key or a pin code and allow you to open the door normally from the inside.
The design will depend on the type of lock you go for. Deadbolts are the least conspicuous, while those that require a pin code are a little more noticeable. A more obvious door lock isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as even the sight of it can help deter thieves.
The vast majority of door security locks are made from metal. This is robust and durable, with good weather resistance. The outer casing may be made from brass, chrome, steel or nickel, while the internal mechanisms are usually made from brass or die cast zinc.
When it comes to the strength of the door lock, it is often the mechanisms that have more of an effect than the material used. So long as the construction is weather resistant and tough, your lock should last a very long time.
Door Security Lock FAQ
How to install a security door lock?
Deadbolts should be installed around 44” above the bottom of the door. To start, mark the centres of the 2-hole positions (both the lock cylinder and the latch bolt), then drill the hole into the door face for the lock cylinder.
Next, drill the latch bolt hole into the edge of the door. You should cut a perfectly round hole into the wood, then position the latch bolt into the edge of the door. Install the two mounting screws to hold it in place.
Push the remaining portion of the lock through the hole in the latch bolt and adjust, then secure the two sides of the lock together using screws. Shut the door and mark where the latch bolt touches, before drilling a hole where the latch bolt will enter. Install the strike plate using the included screws.
Close the door and test the lock, adjusting the lock until the latch bolt moves smoothly into the hole.
A door security lock can make your home that much harder to break into, keeping you, your family and your possessions safe! For its smart connectivity, built-in tamper alarm and easy fit, the Yale Keyless Connected Smart Door Lock is our top recommendation for the best front door security lock.
