Dryer Buyer’s Guide
While not an essential, a tumble dryer can save hours when it comes to your laundry, especially in the winter months. Large families that get through a lot of laundry every week can quickly run out of hanging space, and putting on a freshly dried jumper on a chilly day is the ultimate luxury.
Tumble dryers are an investment, and if you’re going to spend a lot of money on an appliance, you’ll want to get it right the first time. Not sure what to look for when it comes to the best dryer? Check out this buyer’s guide.
Dimensions
Tumble dryers are available in a range of sizes and it’s important that you have the space available. The standard size is the same as washing machines, at 85cm x 60cm. It’s important you have more space than this to allow for manoeuvrability when installing your dryer.
If you lack space in your home, smaller dryers are readily available. Compact, portable and table top dryers are perfect for smaller homes and families, and although these normally have a far lower drum capacity, they still allow those without a lot of space to experience the magic of tumble dried clothing!
Capacity
The capacity of tumble dryers can also vary hugely. Large capacity dryers are more energy efficient but more expensive to purchase initially. Your clothes will dry quicker in a larger capacity dryer.
Dryers with a capacity of 7kgs or less are best for small families and single person households. 10kg dryers are best for big families, capable of drying even thick king size duvets.
Drying Programmes
Most dryers come with a range of drying programmes to keep your clothes in tip top condition. Many come with settings for wool, delicates and jeans, and you should also be able to choose from a variety of drying options, such as iron dry, cupboard dry and extra dry. Some dryers also come with a shoe rack.
Energy Efficiency
Tumble dryers can be costly to run, so opt for one with energy efficient features if you’re looking to save money. A drying sensor will detect the amount of moisture in the drum and tailor the programme to reduce the drying time and save money. You should also look for an energy rating of B or higher.
Dryers FAQ
What is a condenser tumble dryer and how does it work?
A condenser tumble dryer can be put in any well ventilated area of your home, as there’s no need to connect the exhaust hose to the outside of your house. They condense the steam in the machine and store it in a water tank. This tank can then be removed and emptied into the sink when full.
What is a vented tumble dryer and how does it work?
Vented tumble dryers work differently to condenser dryers, as they pump the hot and damp air through a hose and outside your house. This gives you less flexibility when it comes to the location of your dryer, as it will need to be placed next to a wall or window. Vented tumble dryers are more traditional and usually more affordable.
How to clean a tumble dryer?
You should aim to give your tumble dryer a deep clean once every few months. To start, turn off the power supply and clean the drum area using a stainless steel cleaner.
Remove the lint filter (which you should clean on a much more regular basis) and brush any fluff and debris off with your fingers, then clean it with warm water. If necessary, you can vacuum remaining fluff from the lint filter.
Clean the inside of your tumble dryer by removing the back panel and vacuuming around the blower area. Then spray white vinegar onto a towel and place it in the machine. Run a drying cycle to remove any odours.
