Duster Buyer’s Guide
A good duster is an essential tool in any cleaning kit, keeping your shelves, surfaces and technology looking tip top. While traditional dusters are made from feather, there’s now a huge range of different materials and types to choose from.
Not sure what to look for when it comes to the best duster? Take a look at this buyer’s guide.
Material
Feather dusters are the most traditional, and the best feather duster will be easy to use and lightweight. However, many feather dusters only brush the dirt around, as opposed to trapping it. Look for a high-quality feather duster with good reviews if this is the material you prefer.
Microfibre dusters are extremely effective, as they produce a small static electric charge that attracts dust, rather than pushing it around. Microfibre dusters are versatile, lightweight, and can be cleaned in the washing machine.
Finally, there’s lambswool dusters. These are more expensive and create static electricity that collects dust. Although reusable, they are not machine washable and need to be cleaned by hand.
Design
Dusters come in a range of designs, to suit almost any cleaning task. The most effective design, for hard-to-reach areas, is a flexible dusting wand. These have a long, thin head that can be slotted into awkward areas, such as the tops of bookshelves or in between cabinets.
Some dusters come with more than one head, so you can choose the design based on the cleaning task.
Duster FAQ
How to clean a duster?
If your microfibre duster is machine washable, simply remove the head and clean it in the washing machine at a cold temperature with no bleach or fabric softeners. Hang the duster up to air-dry.
For dusters that can’t be cleaned in the washing machine, you should clean with warm water and dishwashing soap. First, shake any debris from the duster, then swish it around in the water to create suds. Clean between the bristles using your hands, then hold underneath warm running water for a few minutes. Allow to air-dry.
If your duster is made from lambswool, you should rinse in cold water instead of warm, then dry it using a towel.
