Sleeping Ear Plugs Buyer’s Guide

From the whir of the fridge, to the road outside, to a snoring partner, there’s a whole lot of noises that can disturb our precious sleep. If you regularly find yourself tossing and turning, unable to switch off from the night-time noises, a set of ear plugs for sleeping should be top of your list.

To maximise noise reduction, traditional ear plugs compress as you push them into your ear, expanding to fill your ear canal once inside. They’re perfect for noisy bedrooms, morning commutes or long-haul flights, absorbing a surprising amount of sound. Other variations of earplug sit over the entrance to your ear which can be more comfortable.

Not sure what to look for when it comes to the best reusable ear plugs for sleeping? Check out this buyer’s guide.

Foam vs Silicone

Ear plugs are usually made from either foam or silicone. Foam, or memory foam, earplugs block sound effectively, are very comfortable and come in a range of sizes to suit the shape of your ear canal. However they can itch if used for long periods of time and will get dirty faster than silicone.

Silicone ear plugs are very comfortable and fit across the entrance of your ear. If you have sensitive skin, silicone ear plugs are a better option. They are antibacterial, won’t cause itchiness and are often more comfortable. Silicone ear plugs can be used a few times over as they tend to stay cleaner than foam earplugs.

Noise Absorption

The effectiveness of ear plugs is called the Noise Reduction Rating (NRR). This is measured in decibels and refers to the level of sound the ear plugs can absorb.

If you have a lot of noise to block out (for example you live close to a noisy runway), look for ear plugs with an NRR of over 30dB.

Reusability

Reusable ear plugs are generally much more expensive than disposable ear plugs. Regularly reusing disposable ear plugs can lead to irritation and ear infections, so ensure you use the ear plugs according to the instructions.
