Liberon Natural Finish Floor Varnish Review

With a long history of making oils, waxes and varnishes for serious craftspeople, Liberon are the first name when it comes to the best floor varnish for wooden floors. Using mostly natural products, they have a great reputation with professionals and savvy DIYers.

Our favourite thing about this Liberon Natural Floor Varnish is the way that it protects wooden floors without changing the beautiful wood underneath. There’s no yellowing or any discolouration at all, at least when we tested it out.

It brings out the grain underneath, but still protects against heavy traffic. It’s the best floor varnish for parquet floor because you shouldn’t lose the precious wood colour underneath. All it leaves is a light satin sheen that’s also safe for toys, which can’t be a bad thing.

Rustins Floor Varnish for Wood & Cork Floors Review

When the furniture trade was the biggest thing around Shoreditch in London, Rustins was the go-to place for quality wood preservatives, dyes and paints. They’ve been in the trade since 1924, so they should know more than a thing or two about the best floor varnish for pine, oak or even cork floors.

With a 20 minute touch-dry time, it means you’re not waiting around for hours before you can get on with the job, and the hardwearing finish should protect your floors from scuffs, spills and dents for years to come. We like the fact that it’s non-toxic and is nicely low odour as well.

Sadolin Polyurethane Floor Varnish Review

With roots stretching as far back as 1777, Swedish wood protection experts Sadolin are a force to be reckoned with when it comes to making the best floor varnish for wooden floors. Their range of varnishes covers all interior and exterior wood applications such as decking, garden furniture and fencing.

We got hold of their Polyurethane Floor Varnish and applied it to an untreated wooden board. The polyurethane in the varnish means that it will expand and contract with the wood itself, which should stop cracking or crazing. We liked how easy it was to apply, and even the longer recoat time didn’t put us off. It’s one of the best floor varnishes we’ve tried out so far.

Ronseal Diamond Hard Floor Varnish Review

The brand that does exactly what it says on the tin is back with a floor varnish in their Diamond Hard range. Alongside other ultra-tough paints and floor coverings, this is among the best floor varnish for hardwood floors that we have tried out so far.

With a whopping 18 m² of coverage it really does just keep going and going, we used a small foam roller and were impressed with how easy it was to apply to bare wood board. However, our favourite feature is the lack of strong smell. Unlike some other floor varnishes, it was pretty pleasant to work with.

Everbuild Ultra Hard Floor Varnish Review

Leeds-based Everbuild are well known in the building trades for their range of the best floor varnish products and other specialist surface coatings. We knew we had to try out their floor varnish on some bare pine board, to get a good idea of coverage and finish.

Their Ultra Hard Floor Varnish is a versatile floor varnish that adheres well to most hardwood, softwood, hardboard, chipboard and composite wooden boards. Our favourite feature must be the quick recoat time. We weren’t sure it would be ready in just 30 minutes, but it took a fine sanding and was ready to go.

Conclusion

Hardwood floors are a thing of beauty when they’re well looked after. But a busy home means scrapes, spills and scuffs that can ruin the look of your floor. Luckily, we’ve compared five of the best floor varnish options, so you can help your floor stay looking great for years to come. They’re all good options, but the Liberon Natural Finish Floor Varnish is our absolute favourite. It nourishes the wood and brings out its true colour, all while protecting it from everything life can throw at it.
