Fridge Water Filter Buyer’s Guide
Fridges with built-in water dispensers are a welcome feature, allowing you to pour fresh, clean and cold water whenever you like.
However, water filters don’t last forever, and it won’t be long until you’ll need to purchase a replacement. There’s a huge range of fridge water filters on the market and choosing the right one for your fridge can be tricky.
Not sure what to look for? Take a look at this buyer’s guide.
Pieces in the Set
Most water filters come with a couple of filters included. These tend to be the best value for money, and if each filter lasts for 6 months, you won’t need to purchase a new set for a while.
For ease, look for a filter that’s simple to install with instructions included.
Quality Standards
All fridge water filters have to meet certain standards to be allowed on the market. An NSF 42 certification will give great tasting water, free from chemicals and contaminants, while NSF 372 will ensure your water is lead-free.
Compatibility
It’s important that your filter is compatible with your fridge. Certain fridge manufacturers will produce their own replacement filters. While these are normally good quality and ensure you won’t purchase the wrong filter, they tend to be the more expensive filters on the market.
Most filter manufacturer’s make it clear which fridge their filters are and aren’t compatible with. Remember that if you purchase a filter that isn’t compatible with your fridge model, you won’t be able to use it.
Months of Use
The lifespan of a fridge water filter is measured in either months or litres/gallons. Most filters need to be replaced after around 6 months, and this is where a multi-pack comes in helpful. Purchasing a few filters at a time will ensure you’ve got one ready as soon as your existing filter needs replacing.
Fridge Water Filter FAQ
How to change the water filter in a fridge?
To replace the water filter in the fridge, you should first turn off your ice machine and turn off the water supply.
Take a look at the existing filter and note the flow direction, then remove it from the brackets. There will likely be connectors at both the top and bottom of the water filter, which should also be removed. Pull the hose away from the water filter to release the hose, then connect the hose ends to your new filter.
Ensure you place your new filter following the same flow direction, then re-fit the connectors to keep the hoses in place. Once everything is tight and secure, turn on the water supply.
Clean the filter by pouring and discarding 10 glasses of water.
How often should I change my fridge water filter?
Ideally, your water filter should be changed every 6 months. Even if you haven’t reached the maximum water capacity, you should still change your filter 6 months after installation.
