Hand Mixer Buyer’s Guide
Sometimes using a stand mixer is too much effort. That’s where having a reliable hand mixer is a great tool to have, and buying one is easy when you know about these key features to look out for!
Design
There are two main designs for hand mixers; traditional, which mimicked a stand mixer, and vertical, which are more common with stick blenders etc. However, it’s these features that they offer which is important; a powerful motor with multiple speeds, overdrive power, easy release of beaters, handle ergonomics, and a cord that stays out of the way when in use.
Speed settings
As a minimum you want 3 speed; low, medium, and fast, and overdrive or boost, for that bit of extra air in your egg whites!
Handle comfort
This is important, as it’s literally what you’re holding on to! It should sit comfortably in the palm of your hand, fingers wrapped securely, and not placing undue pressure on your wrist at any point! Handles that are poorly designed will cause RSIs (Repetitive Strain Injury) when used for long periods of time.
Power
The more, the better! This is where your fluffy meringues and super creamy biscuit bases are created. Make sure there’s enough grunt to get the job done – without burning out the motor, which can happen when hand mixers are used over long periods of time!
Ease of cleaning
An easy to operate eject button, and wipe clean body are essential here. No slippery triggers or complicated push-pull-twist rubbish. Just push a button, and the beaters are released! Look for attachments that are dishwasher safe, or at the very least, able to withstand the occasional blast in a dishwasher. Attachments that are hand wash only may be constructed with plastic that will deteriorate quickly over time, becoming brittle, and prone to breaking and lodging in your food.
