Jam Jar Buyer’s Guide
Whether it’s thick strawberry jam or tangy orange marmalade, anyone who regularly makes their own preserves will know the importance of the right jar. The best jam jar will be the right size, dishwasher safe and fridge safe.
Jam jars are available in a range of sizes and styles, to suit any preferences. Not sure what to look for when it comes to the best jam jar? Take a look at this buyer’s guide.
Capacity
The capacity can vary a lot between brands. Smaller jam jars of 150ml or less are the easiest to store and hold just a small amount of jam. Large jars of up to 1L in size are also available. Standard jam jars can hold around 380ml of jam.
Shape
Jam jars are generally either round or hexagonal. Other options are available, including oval and cylindrical. The shape is unlikely to affect the taste, although a wide opening is generally preferred for ease of serving. Hexagonal shapes are a little more interesting than round jars!
Lid Type
The lid is extremely important if you want your jam to last. It’s important that the lid is both airtight and watertight, to help keep your jam fresher for longer. Some lids can’t be cleaned in the dishwasher, as this will break the airtight seal.
