Kitchen Recessed Lighting Buyer’s Guide
Recessed lighting is stylish and functional, brightening any space. It’s particularly effective in the kitchen, beautifully illuminating your worktop for food prep and cooking.
Not sure what to look for when it comes to the best kitchen recessed lighting? Take a look at this buyer’s guide.
Lights in the Set
Recessed lighting normally comes with either 5 or 10 lights in the set. For smaller spaces, opt for a set with just a few lights included. These can be used to accent certain areas or for task lighting.
The lights you purchase will emit a certain amount of light, measured in lumens. For use in the kitchen, around 300 lumens of light per square metre is good to aim for, but if you’re going to be illuminating a kitchen work surface, we recommend 500 lumens per square metre.
Efficiency
Kitchen recessed lighting usually uses LED bulbs, which are far more efficient than halogen bulbs. LED lighting helps to lower your energy costs, and the bulbs are cool to the touch. I recommend looking for lights with an energy rating of A+ or higher.
Design
Recessed lighting comes in a range of designs, with different trims. Those with open trims are great for minimalist and contemporary homes, as the bulb will blend beautifully into the ceiling. Other trims are available to give your lighting that extra finish.
Recessed lighting is also available with trims in various colours. You’ll have the choice of white, black, nickel, chrome, bronze, silver and much more. Some lights allow you to change the trim without removing the housing, so the lights can be adjusted to match the room if you redecorate!
Extra Features
The best recessed kitchen lighting may have extra features to improve the ease of use. Those able to be controlled using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or a smart home device are exceptionally convenient. You can enter the kitchen with your hands full of shopping and not have to fumble around for the light switch!
Other lights have an adjustable brightness and colour, allowing you to set the atmosphere of the room. The angle is also normally adjustable.
Ease of Installation
A recessed lighting kit is the most convenient purchase, as these come with the housing and trim in one package. Most lights and trims can be installed using simple clips and springs which will come with your lighting kit.
These are usually relatively easy to install, but it’s best to enlist the help of an electrician if you are unsure.
FAQ
How to install recessed lighting in the kitchen?
While installing recessed lighting in the kitchen can be done without professional help, I highly recommend enlisting the help of an electrician if you are inexperienced or concerned about installing your new lighting.
- Turn off the power in the room using the main fuse or breaker box
- To start, you should plan where you’re putting your lights using the template provided with your lighting kit
- Drill a ¼” hole in the opening, then check using a coat hanger that there’s no obstructions. Cut a larger hole around the template
- Cut the rest of the holes in the ceiling for your lights
- Run an NM-B wire from the power source to a switch box and then to the hole in the ceiling
- Run the wire from the first hole to the second hole and so on
- Wire the light by clamping the cables to the junction box, matching black to black, white to white and ground to ground
- Mount the light using the integrated clips
- Add the trim using the coil springs included
- Finally, install the light bulbs you wish to use
- Turn the power back on and check the lights are working
Conclusion
Recessed lighting can transform any home, and it’s particularly effective in the kitchen. For their safety, long lifespan and 500 lumen brightness, the Tomshine LED Kitchen Recessed Ceiling Lights are my top recommendation!
