Mug Set Buyer’s Guide
A set of everyday mugs should be one of your first purchases when moving to a new home, and there aren’t many Brits who can go without a tea or coffee first thing in the morning! The right mugs should be suitable for everyday use, low maintenance and add a little style to your morning brew.

Material
Most mugs are made from ceramic, which conducts heat slowly to keep your tea or coffee warmer for longer. Porcelain is another popular choice, and these tend to offer more flexibility when it comes to design.
Fine bone china is another option. This tends to be thinner and lighter than porcelain and, although very elegant, it’s harder to clean and maintain. For everyday use, ceramic and porcelain mugs are the best option.
Capacity
Mugs are available in a range of sizes, from tiny teacups, to novelty mugs that hold a litre or more of tea. Everyday mugs generally have a capacity of between 250ml and 360ml. Those with a 250ml capacity may be a little small for regular tea drinkers, but they’re perfect for espressos and small coffees.
Design
From popular culture illustrations and quotes, to prints of famous artwork, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to design. For everyday use, many people find the simpler the better. Mugs in block colours are easiest to clean in the dishwasher, while those with intricate illustrations or patterns may need to be cleaned by hand.
The shape and size of both the mug and its handle is also important. Thicker and larger handles are more comfortable, while mugs with small dainty handles are a little fiddlier.
