Nail File Buyer’s Guide
A great nail file is a must have for any makeup bag, handbag or bedside table! Keeping your nails in tip top shape is easy with the right nail file, but while purchasing a nail file might seem like a simple task, there’s a whole range of variations on offer.
Traditional nail files are a simple emery board with 2 levels of grit. These are low cost and best if you don’t file your nails all that frequently. They’re also the best if you’re prone to losing small things!
Emery boards vary in their abrasiveness, with some more suitable for gel and acrylic nails than others. Many emery boards are designed for long term use, but those with a cardboard core will only last for a handful of uses. These nail files often come in multipacks so you can always have one to hand.
If purchasing an emery board file, take a look at the grit number. A lower grit number of 80-100 is coarse, so better for shaping false nails, acrylics and gels. 180 grit can be used to shape natural nails and remove gels. 600-2400 grit is ultra-fine and will bring a lovely shine to your nails.
Glass or crystal files are the top choice for makeup artists. These are best suited to natural nails, gentler than emery boards but still coarse enough to neaten up your nails quickly. The best crystal nail file will be perfect for damaged or weak nails, and these files can also boost nail strength and growth. While more costly than emery boards, glass nail files are easy to clean and long lasting.
Finally, there’s electric nail files or nail drills. These are perfect for salon-style manicures and pedicures and, though more expensive, they can make filing your nails a relaxing experience. These are usually battery powered, with settings for filing, buffing and polishing.
