Nitromors All Purpose High-Strength Paint Stripper and Varnish Remover Review

Easily the most recognisable and best paint remover for wood, metal and masonry, Nitromors All Purpose Paint & Varnish Remover has been stripping paint since the 1930s and literally means “death to paint” in Latin.

We knew that Nitromors would be on our list, so we got hold of a tin and put it to work on some heavily painted wood. The first thing you notice is the colour: it’s green while it works, but loses its colour once the reaction has finished, so you know when it’s done stripping.

The non-drip gel cuts through layers and layers of paint, lacquer and varnish and should have your top layer of paint blistering within five minutes. It’s the best paint stripper for metal and wood but be careful that it doesn’t come into contact with plastics.

Barrettine Paint Panther Paint & Varnish Remover Review

Barrettine’s Paint Panther uses a powerful formula to remove all sorts of varnishes and even metallised paint – which can prove too much for budget strippers!

The recognisable milky white non-drip gel is easy to apply with a brush and goes to work within 10 minutes of application. Once more coats have been worked into the blisters, it’s simply a case of leaving the Paint Panther Paint & Varnish Remover to do its job and soften the layers.

In most cases you won’t even need to sand the surface down afterwards, you can usually wipe away the paint with a cloth. We think it’s the best paint stripper for the UK market because it’s great value for money and easy to use.

Liberon Fine Wood Paint & Varnish Stripper Review

One of the most respected names in woodworking, Liberon produce a stunning range of natural finishes, waxes, treatments and the best paint stripper for wood. We tried out the Liberon Fine Wood Stripper on some old painted timber and were pleased with the results.

The gel goes on well and is easy to work into those difficult nooks and crannies with a fine brush. The paint will start to bubble and lift between five and 30 minutes and is ready for scraping. Liberon recommend using a plastic scraper or Grade 2/0 steel wool rather than sandpaper, which we think works a treat.

Biostrip Plus Masonry Paint Stripper Review

Staffordshire based Fuze Products are probably best known for their Biostrip 20, the best paint stripper that’s also non-toxic, non-irritant, non-flammable and non-caustic. If you’re looking for a safer way to strip paint from masonry, then Biostrip PLUS Masonry Paint Stripper is the way to go.

It’s a water-based stripper so it’s thankfully nowhere near as smelly or toxic as some of the strippers on this list. It works just as hard though, and can be applied to layers of gloss, primer or emulsion paints on all types of masonry or blockwork.

Kling-Strip The Original Peel-It-Off Paint Stripper Review

Since 1974, professional restorers and decorators have made use of Kling Strip and its clever peel-off technology. It comes as a thick white paste that you apply with a trowel or decorator’s knife and leave for anything between a few hours and a couple of days depending on the layers of paint you need to remove.

We really like the results you get from Kling Strip; it penetrates deep into multiple layers of paint and works its magic as long as it stays wet. It takes a bit more effort when you use this stripper because you must cover the target areas with plastic sheeting, and there’s a lot of mess left behind.

Nevertheless, it’s the best paint remover for delicate surfaces because there’s no scraping involved.

Conclusion

When wood, metal or brickwork gets coated in layer upon layer of paint, trying to remove it can be a massive task. Instead of burning it off with a heat gun or scrubbing away with a scraper until your arm falls off, you can let the best paint stripper do the hard work for you.

All the paint strippers on our list will do the job in one way or another, but the best paint remover in our opinion is the Nitromors All Purpose Paint & Varnish Remover. It’s versatile enough to work on multiple surface types and strong enough to know that you won’t have to do the job twice.
