Photo Frame Buyer’s Guide
Decorating your home with photos of loved ones is a great way to add a homely touch, while also helping you remember happier times after a bad day. There’s a huge range of photo frames on the market to suit any style of home, and finding the best one for you can be difficult.
Not sure what to look for when it comes to the best photo frames? Check out this buyer’s guide.
Material
Photo frames are available in a variety of materials, with the most popular acrylic, glass, and wood. Acrylic frames are lightweight and durable. Acrylic is resistant to scratches and is safe to hang in kids’ rooms.
Glass photo frames feel more expensive, with the added weight giving them a premium feel. While durable, glass is dangerous if it breaks, so very large glass frames are best reserved for your most precious pictures in areas that don’t see a lot of footfall.
Wooden frames are contemporary and minimalist. These look good in any room of the house, and although often heavy, lightweight options are available which makes them suitable for wall hanging. Wooden frames have a gorgeous natural look and tend to last for a very long time. They can be bleached or stained in various colours.
Size
The size of the frame is another consideration. If you want your picture to be a focal point, look for a large frame that can be hung behind your sofa or bed. If you’re after a few homely touches, smaller frames that can be dotted around the room on coffee and side tables are a great option. The size of the frame is measured in inches and refers to the size of the picture it can hold, and not the total size.
Design
You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to design, with anything from art deco, to collages, to contemporary and so much more. Art deco frames use angular patterns and monochrome detailing. These look great in modern and minimalist homes, offering an eye catching aesthetic.
Collage frames are great for teenagers, student dorms and more. Displaying a number of often very small pictures, these are perfect if you really can’t decide which pictures you want to display.
Contemporary frames offer clean lines and aid a minimalist feel. These are often made from wood or glass and come in a range of colours. Monochrome frames suit rooms with a black and white aesthetic.
When it comes to the design of your frame, the sky’s the limit! Most frames allow you to display your pictures either portrait or landscape.
Durability
Whether you’re spending a little or a lot on your new frame, durability is important. Solid wood frames tend to be the most durable, while acrylic also offers great impact resistance. Cheaper flames are great for children’s rooms, but they won’t have as long a lifespan.
Photo Frames FAQ
How to decorate a photo frame?
Many people choose to decorate plain wooden frames, which can be purchased at very affordable prices. Wooden frames can be decorated with paint, tape, additional photos and even tissue paper.
The photo inside can help you decide what to decorate your frame with. If you’re displaying holiday pictures, use PVC glue to stick seashells or nautical decorations to the frame.
There is no one set way to decorate a photo frame, so get creative and see what you can come up with!
How to measure a photo frame?
To measure your photo frame, lay it face down on a surface. Remove the backing board and the picture inside. Measure both the height and width, from the inner edge to the inner edge. You do not need to take into account the width of the frame itself, instead you should measure the area inside the border.
How to frame a photo?
Once you have your picture frame and chosen picture, you can frame your photo. Many photo frames come with all you need to mount your picture, so there is no need to cut the backing to size. Remove the backing board of the photo frame, as well as the matte (the piece of paper inside) and the sample picture. Ensure the glass is clean and free from fingerprints before you add your photo.
Gently place your photo into the frame. Put the matte on top of the picture and add the backing board, using the turning clips to secure it in place. Your picture is now ready to display!
