Pillow Case Buyer’s Guide
While people put a lot of thought into their pillows, the pillowcase is often an afterthought. But your pillowcase gets a huge amount of use, making it arguably one of your most important bedroom purchases. Not only can the right pillowcase improve your sleep, it can also help soothe irritated skin and reduce bedhead!
Not sure where to start when it comes to the best pillowcase? Take a look at this buyer’s guide.
Material
The first thing you need to consider is the material. Pillowcases can be made from either natural or synthetic materials. Cotton, silk and satin are the most popular choices.
Cotton pillowcases are comfortable, affordable and won’t slip across the bed. While they lack the luxurious feeling of silk pillowcases, they have a warm and homely feel. However, they do provide friction while you sleep, which can lead to skin irritation and messy bed hair!
Silk pillowcases are more expensive, for good reason! These are temperature regulating so stay cool in the night, while the lack of friction makes them great for sensitive skin and hair. Many advocates for silk pillowcases claim they can reduce wrinkles, while silk pillowcases are also breathable and hypoallergenic.
The downside to silk pillowcases is that they can be slippery. Combined with a silk and satin bedsheet, you may wake up with your pillow halfway down your bed! This is why many silk pillows have a standard cotton base.
Finally, there’s polyester satin. These offer the same benefits to your hair and skin as silk for a fraction of the cost, but the material may feel more synthetic. These are less breathable than silk pillowcases, so you may get hotter in the night.
Size
The size of your pillowcase is another key consideration and will depend entirely on your choice of pillow. There’s usually 4 different sizes to choose from, with the standard size 50cm x 75cm. Square pillows are available in a 65cm x 65cm size, while king pillows are 50cm x 90cm.
The standard pillow is a good fit from everyone from small children to large adults. If you move around a lot in the night, a larger pillow may provide more support.
Design
Pillowcases come in a range of designs to suit various styles of bedroom. Pillowcases for children can be decorated with bright colours or engaging designs, while adult pillowcases often just come in a block colour.
Another design feature to note is whether the pillowcase closes via a zip or fold. If your pillowcase has a zip, ensure this is small and tucked away so you’re unlikely to roll onto it in the night. Envelope style closures make the pillowcase easy to put on and take off, and are often used for cheaper pillows.
Comfort
To guarantee comfort, look for a high quality pillow with a high thread count and great breathability. Silk tends to be the most breathable, but this can move around in the night. If you’re a wriggler, opt for a silk pillowcase with a cotton base.
