Pour Over Coffee Maker Buyer’s Guide
A pour over coffee is a huge step up from an instant coffee, yet it still offers the same convenience and ease of making. In terms of taste, a pour over coffee is up there with the best, but you’ll need the right equipment for the job.
There’s a range of pour over coffee makers on the market to choose from, in varying sizes and designs. Not sure what to look for? Take a look at this buyer’s guide.
Pour over coffee makers come in an array of sizes, so this really comes down to personal preference. If you’re going to be making coffee for a few people at once, a coffee maker with a 1L capacity is preferable. Single coffee makers may have a 400ml capacity, and these are great for single person or small households.
Pour over coffee makers usually come with both a jug and a filter included. The jug will come in a range of sizes and designs, depending on whether the coffee maker is being purchased for functionality or style! Filters are usually either woven or laser cut, while some will require paper filters.
While some coffee makers are stylish and elegant, others are designed with practicality in mind. Those for taking on the go are usually lightweight, very durable and made from stainless steel. What these lack in style, they more than make up for in ease of use when taken to the beach or on hikes.
Some pour over coffee makers come with extra features to enhance the ease of use. Those with silicone or cork bands will help protect your hands from the hot jug. Others may have silicone grips on the filter so that you can remove it without the worry of burns.
Other coffee makers have a measurement guide up the side which can be handy if you want to perfect your coffee to water ratios!
How to use a pour over coffee maker?
Pour over coffee makers are extremely easy to use. Simply add your coffee grounds to the filter at the ratio of 60g to every 1L of water. Place the filter into the carafe or cup then gently tap the filter to level the surface of the ground coffee.
The first step is to pour water slowly over the coffee, starting at the outer rim and moving inwards towards the centre of the ground. This pour should take around 15 seconds, and you should then allow it to drip for another 30 seconds.
The next step is to pour in a steady spiral towards the outer edge and then move back towards the centre. Add around 90ml to your carafe and wait for a further minute. Gently pour the rest of the water onto the coffee grounds.
You may need to tweak the ratios to find the right flavour for you.
There’s an art to the perfect coffee and pour over coffee is loved by caffeine enthusiasts all around the world. For its gorgeous borosilicate glass carafe, permanent stainless steel filter and high-quality construction, the Bodum Pour Over Coffee Maker with Filter is my top recommendation.
