Shower Tray Buyer’s Guide
A shower tray isn’t something people often put much thought into, but there’s a whole range of shapes, sizes and designs on the market, and you need to be sure the shower tray you buy fits your enclosure.
Struggling to decide on the best shower tray? Here’s what to look out for.
Shape
The shape of your shower tray will need to match your enclosure, as well as your bathroom. Square shower trays are very versatile and can be used with a variety of showers, including those with bifold doors. Square trays are perfect for smaller bathrooms and showers.
Rectangular shower trays are ideal if you have a larger enclosure and bathroom. They give you more room to stretch out, sing, and dance while you shower! There’s a range of other shapes available, but square and rectangular are the most common.
Material
Shower trays are available in a few different materials. Acrylic capped stone resin is the most common. These are seriously scratch resistant and durable, plus they’re easy to clean, although they are very heavy. Fully acrylic shower trays are also durable and contemporary, and are non-slip even when wet – so extra safe for kids and elderly people.
Size
The size of your shower tray will be determined by the size of the enclosure. Remember that if you have a smaller bathroom, a shower enclosure that’s too large will make the space seem smaller. Opt for a minimalist shower enclosure and tray if you have less space to work with.
Anti-slip
Slippery shower trays are extremely dangerous, so it’s essential that your tray is anti-slip. While some are equipped with an anti-slip finish, those made from acrylic are naturally non-slippery. Ensure you check reviews before you buy.
Ease of Installation
Trays with a flat underside are very easy to install, and those with the waste included are even easier. Some stone resin shower trays are very heavy, which can make them harder to install, though the payoff is that they are more durable.
Durability
Shower trays made from stone resin are the most durable, but they are very heavy. These are resistant to rust, stains and corrosion. If you’re worried about the durability of your shower tray, go for one with a warranty.
Drainage
The best shower tray will drain at a rate of around 25L per minute. Go for one that’s slightly sloped to encourage the water towards and into the drain.
FAQ
How to fit a shower tray?
Place your tray where you’d like to install it to check the space and clearance. Draw around the edges with a pencil then cut a hole into the floor to fit the tray (this should absolutely be done by a professional if you are worried!). Cut an access hatch next to the tray for access to the waste.
Attach the waste to the tray by following the instructions, then mix some mortar to a firm consistency and apply to the hole you have cut. Place the tray on top of the mortar, and check that it’s level. Then leave to dry for 24 hours.
While it’s drying, connect the trap to the waste via the access hatch. Finally, seal around the edges of the tray using a silicone sealant.
How to seal a shower tray?
To seal a shower tray, ensure the entire area is dry and clean. Then use a sealant gun to apply an even layer of sealant, starting from the inner corner of the shower and working outwards. There should be no gaps in the sealant.
Once you’ve done the entire tray, smooth the sealant using a spoon and leave to dry for 24 hours.
