Material
The choice is mainly between a clear glass spice mill or a traditional wood finish. Grinding mechanisms use either super sharp stainless steel blades or ceramic cutting discs.
Some of the glass spices mills are finished with shiny stainless steel which gives a crisp contemporary look on the dinner table.
Size
If the spice mill has an integrated storage unit then this will affect the size. Generally, a good average to work to is around 14cm – smaller sizes are more popular.
Design
Spice mill design is very similar to the style of a pepper mill because essentially, they perform the same function. Choose from a manual or electric operation.
If you have limited mobility in your hands then you will find that some designs are easier to use than others, particularly those with a ratchet grinder which is a handle that sticks out at an angle.
The grinding mechanism will either be on the top or the base of the spice mill. A top-grinding design won’t leave a telltale residue on the table or work counter.
Some brands lack a central spindle which can make the filling and cleaning of the mill easier.
Grinder Settings
Each spice mill will differ in how many grinder settings it provides and which one is better for you will depend on the range of spices you intend to grind and your recipe. Check out the ease of adjustment – user reviews can prove helpful in this regard.
