Splatter Screen Buyer’s Guide
Whether you’re frying bacon or simmering a spag bol, keeping those oil and sauce spills off your hob, walls and clothing is a full time job! A splatter screen is a simple but highly effective solution. They can simply be placed over your bubbling pot or spitting pan to protect you and your kitchen from splatter.

Material
Splatter screens are usually made from either stainless steel or silicone. Stainless steel is lightweight, heat resistant and easy to use. The actual screen is usually made from mesh which can reduce well over 90% of the splatter. Stainless steel splatter screens can usually be cleaned in the dishwasher, but fine mesh can be a little challenging to clean.
Silicone splatter screens are lightweight and equally effective, and they too can be cleaned in the dishwasher. Instead of mesh, they have a few holes on the covering which release steam while reducing splatter. This style of splatter screen tends to be easier to clean.
Size
Splatter screens come in a range of sizes to suit the size of your pots and pans. Those measuring 29cm across are the most universal fit. These can be used to prevent splatter from pans up to 29cm in size.
Some splatter screen sets come with a few different sizes included, so you’ll always have one to fit the size of pan you’re working with.
Design
Most splatter screens boast a similar design, with either mesh or individual holes. Where they differ is in the handle. Those with foldable handles are extremely popular for those with limited kitchen storage, while some have smaller handles at the side which take up far less space than an extended handle. Some also have a hanging hook for easy storage.
Many splatter screens have small feet which elevate the screen off your worktop. This ensures that when you take it off the pan to stir or inspect your meal, you can place the screen onto your worktop without making a mess.
Most splatter screens are multifunctional, able to be used as strainers, cooling mats and draining boards.
