Suit Hanger Buyer’s Guide
A great suit doesn’t come cheap, and while the temptation is to leave it draped over a chair at the end of a long day, a quality suit deserves quality storage. But one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to suit hangers, and there’s a few things to bear in mind before you make a purchase.
Not sure what to look for when it comes to the best suit hangers? Check out this buyer’s guide.
Material
Suit hangers are most commonly made from plastic or wood. Plastic suit hangers often have a velvet coating which gives them great grip. Good quality plastic hangers will be able to hang a whole suit, but cheaper options may struggle and snag. Plastic hangers are best for your lightweight shirts and ties.
Plastic coat hangers with velvet layers are great for more expensive items, and these are most commonly used to hang suits. These are luxurious and aesthetic, providing the perfect home for more expensive suits.
Wooden suit hangers are extremely durable and classy, but they can be slippery. They won’t sag under the weight of heavier garments, although they’re not as suitable for small wardrobes.
Design
Suit hangers all have a similar design, but one key feature to look out for is an integrated tie holder. Those with a 360 degree swivel hook will help you hang your suits more efficiently, and many have notched shoulders which makes them suitable for other items of clothing.
Size
Suit hangers are available in a range of sizes and thicknesses. Wooden suit hangers can be bulky, so if your wardrobe space is limited, look for space saving plastic hangers.
Durability
Quality suit hangers should last a long time, so you can sleep easy knowing your expensive suit is hanging safely in your wardrobe! Wooden suit hangers are the most durable, but plastic hangers with a velvet layer are a more popular and affordable choice. Ensure you don’t exceed the maximum weight capacity of your hanger, and never hang a damp suit on velvet hangers.
Suit Hangers FAQ
How to fold suit trousers on a hanger?
Folding your trousers so they’re crease-free is an art, and luckily it’s very easy to learn! Take a trouser leg in each hand, maintaining the natural crease. Straddle the hanger using the trouser legs, then fold one leg through the hanger. The bottom hem should be just a few inches above the crotch of the trousers.
With your other hand, fold the other leg over the first and through the hanger in the opposite direction. Straighten the trousers out so that the creases line up. This will prevent the trousers from falling off, while maintaining the natural crease.
