Vacuum Storage Bag Buyer’s Guide
A home that’s lacking in storage will quickly become cluttered and messy, but you don’t have to have an entire room filled to the brim with spare bedding, clothing and towels. Instead, all you need is some vacuum storage bags.
By sucking the air out of the bags, your bedding, pillows and towels will temporarily shrink to a fraction of their usual size. Simply put all your things in the right size bag, suck the air our using the vacuum or seal, and store them away neatly. They’ll stay fresh and ready to use when needed.
Ready to start saving space and storing your things in a far more satisfying way? Here’s what to look out for.
Size
Most vacuum storage bag sets come in a range of sizes. Small bags are great for clothes and bedsheets, medium for pillows, while large or jumbo size bags are best for throws and duvets. If you’ve got a variety of things you need storing, go for a set with a variety of sizes.
Seal
Vacuum storage bags work in a similar way but the seal may be different. It’s essential that the bags stay sealed to prevent mould, damp and mildew. Look for a bag with a strong, easy to use and durable seal.
Other vacuum storage bags are used by rolling up to reduce the amount of air inside them and then sealing. These are slightly less effective and if you go for a cheaper set, the material will be more likely to tear.
Pump
Many storage bags come with a pump, and sometimes a travel pump to use on the go, which is great for holidays. Other storage bags can be used with just a standard vacuum cleaner.
Airtight
All storage bags should be airtight to prevent your things getting mouldy or damp. The seal will play a large part in how airtight they are, but it’s also essential that the material of the bag is thick, strong and sturdy to prevent wear and tear.
FAQ
How to use vacuum storage bags?
Ensure you have the right size bag for what you are storing, then open the bag on a flat surface. Fold the materials and put them inside the bag, being careful not to overfill it.
Clip the storage bag closed, sealing the 2 plastic zips. Ensure you haven’t missed any part of the zip by running your fingers across it and checking for lumps. Then undo the valve by unscrewing it and place the vacuum cleaner nozzle or pump onto the valve. Press it against the valve and turn the vacuum on, patting down parts of the bag to keep the sealing even. Once as much air has been removed as possible, screw the valve cap back on.
To open the bag when needed, simply pull apart the zip. There is no need to let air back in via the valve, as air will enter the bag automatically.
While using a vacuum storage bag is very easy, you do need to ensure that all items are dry before storing, as well as the inside of the bag. Do not try to force the valve open, and be careful not to use it for items that are damaged by compression such as feather duvets or leather.
