Washer-Dryer Buyer’s Guide
There’s no denying that washing machines and tumble dryers are bulky appliances, and can be difficult to fit in smaller homes.
If you lack the space, or budget, for a separate washer and dryer, a washer dryer combo is a great alternative. They boast similar features to standard washing machines, with a built in dryer for added ease.
From dimensions, capacity, wash programmes and more, there’s a lot to think about when it comes to the best washer dryer. Not sure what to look for? Check out this buyer’s guide.
Dimensions
Washer dryers are designed for space saving (as there’s no need for two separate machines). However, they can still be bulky so it’s important you ensure you have enough space before you make a purchase.
A standard size washer dryer is 85cm x 60cm x 60cm, although this can vary by a few cm. Remember to allow space for the hose to connect at the back, and ensure the area you plan to put your machine is slightly bigger to allow for adjustability when installing.
Capacity
Washer dryers will have both a wash capacity and a spin capacity. Washer capacities are larger, usually varying from 5kgs up to 10kg. The drying capacity will be less, ranging from 4kg to 7kg.
A large capacity washer dryer will be more expensive but it will allow you to wash more at once, saving both time and money. If you live in a small or single person household, capacity needn’t be a consideration.
Wash Programmes
Most washer dryers come with a range of wash programmes to suit your type of clothing and time restraints. Almost all come with a quick wash, and most come with a few different lengths of cycle to choose from.
Other useful wash programmes include an allergy wash which is great if you suffer from allergies, as well as delicate cycles for more expensive garments.
Drying System
Some machines will allow you to programme a drying cycle to follow your wash cycle which is ideal if you’re heading out for the day. Others come with a sensor dry system, which automatically detects when the washing is dry enough and turns off the machine, reducing energy consumption and stopping your clothes from shrinking
Most washer dryers come with 3 levels to choose from; Ready to Iron, Cupboard Dry and Extra Dry.
Special Features
Most machines come with various special features. A child lock is handy if you have curious kids, as the machine will disable the control panel once the wash programme has been chosen.
Many machines come with an integrated timer so you can set your machine to run at a time that suits you. Others can be controlled using a smartphone app. This is handy but not essential, although it does allow you to check the progress of your washing without moving from the sofa!
Washer-Dryers FAQ
How to install a washer dryer?
Installing your washing machine incorrectly will lead to it not working properly, so it’s important you get this right and contact a professional if you’re unsure.
To start, you should ensure your old washing machine is removed correctly, then remove the carriage bolts from your new machine. Attach the cold water-in hose, using mole grips or your hands to do this. Do not overtighten the hoses as they can break.
Once you’ve successfully attached the cold water supply hose, release the isolation valve to allow water to flow through, checking for leaks as it does.
Next, attach the waste water hose. Most machines come with a plastic U-bend which you can attach the hose to, so your hose won’t kink. The waste hose will need to be fed manually into your waste water down pipe.
Level your washing machine using a spirit level. If the machine isn’t level, adjust the legs at the front to make it straight and stable. A machine that’s not level will lead to unwanted vibrations and noise.
How to clean a washer dryer?
Cleaning your washer dryer is both important and very easy! If your machine isn’t properly maintained, you’ll find its lifespan dramatically reduces.
To deep clean your washer dryer, you should first set the washer to the hottest and longest wash setting you can. Place two cups of vinegar and a small amount of baking soda into the drum, then start the cycle. When the cycle is completed, use water and a sponge to clean the inside of the drum, then dry.
