Washing Machine Buyer’s Guide
Tackling pile after pile of dirty laundry is a whole lot easier if you have the right machine for the job. Washing machines are an investment and should last a long time, so it’s essential that you know exactly what you’re looking for before you make a purchase.
Not sure what to look for when it comes to the best washing machine? Check out this buyer’s guide.
Dimension
Standard washing machines are 85cm high and 60cm wide. This is the standard size no matter what the drum capacity, so those that hold more or less clothing may still take up the same amount of space. While smaller models are available, they are harder to find.
Keep in mind the amount of space you have available. Measure the space you have precisely, and remember you’ll need some room to manoeuvre it into the right position.
Washing machines are either integrated or freestanding. The best integrated washing machine will save space and offer a sleek and minimalist aesthetic.
Capacity
The washing machine capacity is measured in litres, and refers to the amount of washing the drum cam hold. Those with large capacities of 10-13kgs are great for big families with a lot of washing. They tend to clean your clothes better, as they won’t need to be squashed in.
Drums with a 7-9kg capacity are best suited to medium size households, while those with a capacity of 6kg and under are suitable for single person households and couples.
Wash Programmes
Most washing machines come with a number of preset wash programmes to suit different requirements. If you need your clothes cleaned in a hurry, a quick wash is perfect. This’ll have your clothes clean in under an hour.
Other useful wash programmes include allergy washes which eliminate allergens and remove any leftover detergent. Cotton, wool and delicate cycles will keep your more expensive garments safe.
Energy Efficiency
Washing machines can be expensive to run, so it’s worth bearing the energy rating in mind when you browse. Energy ratings range from A+++ to D, with A+++ the most efficient. We highly recommend shopping for at least an A energy rating.
Washing Machine FAQ
How to use a washing machine?
Once your machine is installed and set up, using it is fairly easy. Check the labels of your clothes for any special washing requirements (such as a low temperature). Separate your garments into colours and whites. Put your clothes into the washing machine.
Choose the right wash cycle for your clothing. A normal cycle is suitable for most everyday clothing, while delicate cycles are for special garments like lingerie or clothing with sequins. Set the temperature of the water according to the instructions given with the clothes. This is usually around 30 or 40 degrees.
Pour in the detergent and any other products like fabric softener. Some have a drawer for dispensing the detergent, while washing machine tablets are pre measured and can be added in with your clothes.
How to clean a washing machine?
Detergent and minerals can build up in your washing machine, leading to bad smells and mould. Your washing machine needs regular cleaning, even if it looks okay from the outside!
To clean your washing machine, add two cups of white cleaning vinegar to the dispenser and switch the washer to the highest level and hottest temperature. Run your machine through a complete cycle, and then do the same again after adding half a cup of baking soda to the drum. Wipe the inside of the drum using a damp cloth once the machine has gone through two full cycles.
