With a long history stretching back to the bustling furniture industry around Shoreditch, London, in the 1920’s, Rustins know more than most about the best paint primer to choose for use on wood. We got hold of their Quick Drying Primer and Undercoat, and took it for a test drive.

We love the versatility of this primer, it’s at home on plaster, brickwork and cement as much as bare or even pre-painted wood. With a pleasing consistency that’s not too thick or thin, it goes on like a dream and gives great coverage too. It dries quickly and leaves a nice matt finish, ready for a top coat. It’s easily the best undercoat paint on the list.

No-nonsense paint and preservative brand Leyland Trade have given the UK more than 90 years’ good service, so we included their Acrylic Primer Undercoat on to our list. Seeing as they already make some of the best paint primers available in the UK, we weren’t disappointed with this one.

It’s a nice water-based paint that hasn’t got a strong odour, which makes for easier working conditions compared to oil-based primers. It’s not the thickest consistency, but it’s nicely opaque and blocks out knots and imperfections well.

Dulux are up there with the best wood primer, paint and decorating brands out there. A household name, we knew we had to try out their version of Primer & Undercoat for Wood. Just as good on exterior as well as interior woods, it can be used on bare or previously coated surfaces.

Our favourite feature of this primer is the consistency. It goes on thick and doesn’t drip, which makes a change from some of the thinner primers out there. It was easy to clean the brush off, being a water-based paint as well. As you would expect from Dulux, it’s one of the best wood primer and undercoat options.

One of the best-known paint and preservative brands in the UK, Ronseal are famous for making some of the best paint primers around. We tested out their One Coat All Surface Primer & Undercoat, on a piece of knotty wood.

Does it do exactly what it says on the tin though? We’re happy to say it does. One thick coat and we were ready to paint over the top, leaving an excellent flat coloured finish. It’s the best undercoat paint if you want to get the job done quickly and with minimal effort.

Lancashire’s Crown Paints are another notable brand when it comes to the best wood primer and undercoat available to the UK market. With a range of specialist primers and undercoats for all surfaces, they firmly belong on this list of the best paint primer choices.

Even though the recoat time is quite a bit longer than the others on this list, the finish is superb and leaves your surface ready for painting with minimal fuss. We liked the consistency of Crown’s Quick Dry Primer, it isn’t prone to dripping, and is touch dry in less than an hour.
